Rear wheel stud and lug nut stripped

I was replacing brake pads and one of the rear right lug nuts wouldn't come out. Finally with a lot of PB Blaster, sweat, screaching and going back and forth it came loose only to reveal that both the lug nut and the stud are stripped.

What's the best way to replace them? Are the studs screwed in or pressed in? Do I need to remove the hub?

Thanks,

Serge

Serge,

The rear is easier than the front - you just need to remove the rotor and you have enough room in the back of that to hammer/push the stud out and a enough room to pull the stud back in.

The front the whole thing has to come off. You will need a brass drift to push out the stud and some washers to pull it back. Have fun.

They're much easier to get out/in if you have access to a press. A lot of shops (not just auto) have them; they may help you on the cheap.

I have a couple of C-clamps. I was going to use them to press it out. Would heating the area with a heat gun be of help?

This happened to me up front. I just used a thread die to clean up the stud and bought a new lug nut. Depending on how bad the threads are, this may work for you, Good luck.

The stud is hosed. There ain't nothing that will clean that sucker up. I just returned from the stealership. Bought a new stud and a new lug nut. $25 for both. Lug nut was $14. Will play with them tonight probably. Is the parking barke stuff going to be in my way when I press the old stud out? Do I need to remove it?

Got it done. I was able to use some of the PB blaster and a 4lb sledge to pound the old stud out.

Now on to the front end bearing repack and pads.

Thanks for your help.

Serge
