Well, it looks like I may have joined the failed transmission ranks.
Less than 2 months ago I began having a low idling problem which coincided with a stalling problem. The dealer said there was a code indicating the torque converter solenoid was not disengaging the torque converter when I was braking to a stop. I suspected it was a problem related to the low idle. After cleaning the throttle body the revs came right up and the problem disappeared. Problem solved, right?
On my way home from work tonight, as I came to a stop the vehicle shuddered and stalled. I shifted to neutral and started the engine. After turning off the radio and opening the windows I eased the tranny back into Drive. Stalled immediately. I started in neutral again and waited for the light to change. I dropped it into Drive and gave it a little gas to get going before the engine had a chance to stall. She kind of chugged off the line and I realized the tranny was in 3rd gear. Not good! This repeated for a few more stops on the way home. When I pulled into my driveway doing about 5 mph the tranny was still in 3rd. I was able to manually downshift to 1st and take some of the load off, but if I stopped the engine would stall. Same for Reverse.
I have 111k miles on the truck and have had it since 53k. I have only been off road on the beach a few times. I occassionally tow a utility trailer, typically with less than 1,000 lbs on it. It's primarily a commuter-rated rig that has had no other problems to speak of.
Has anyone replaced their tranny with something other than a remanufactured unit from Toyota? If so, what was it? How did it work out? Did it save you $?
I'm supposed to be leaving on vaca in 2 days with a car load. I guess I'll have to figure another way to haul 4 bikes and all the other stuff.
