We have a 00 LC and 03 GX. Two totally different vehicles. The GX feels lighter duty (to me), not as solid (to me), etc. I choose to drive the LC everytime. They are both great vehicles.

I would think it all comes down to personal preference once again. If you like the 4Runner, great, have fun. If you like the LC, great, have fun.

Which would I choose to drive around the globe? The LC.

The GX/4Runner feels like a lightweight.

Not a all a universally better vehicle. Both are on par.

The 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser is a tough vehicle with it large v8, 5 speed, 1500 pay cap, 12.8 brakes, 6500 tow cap and 10 sec 0-60 times.

Toyota clearly over built the 4runner to match the Land Cruiser in mechanical toughness and it shows in tow cap, payload, Coefficent of drag (.29 vs .40 for 100 series), brake size, frame thickness is now equal.

Depends on need. If I needed to flatten a division of Iraqi troops (oops, forgot, they're our allies now), then I'd obviously take the M1.

If I needed a go-anywhere camping/expedition/family vehicle with all the modern amenities, luxuries, and safety features, and with the added bonus of Toyota reliability, I'd take, uh, my Toyota Land Cruiser. It may not be the absolute best at everything, but overall it has the best blend of all worlds. Remember, you're on a Land Cruiser forum. Of course we think they're the best. That's why we're not on a 4Runner forum, or a Tundra forum.

Your F1 car comparison is apples to oranges. Try taking that car through a rock garden and see how it does. At least the Cruiser can drive through that rock garden, then get on the freeway to take you home. Can't even get the F1 car onto a groomed dirt road.

BTW, Toyota has yet to win a single Formula One title, whether GP or Constructor's. In fact, I don't believe they have even won a single race yet. Give me a McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 or Ferrari F2008 any day...

Have you read any of the previous discussion? Apparently not. Toyota clearly did nothing of the kind. The 4Runner/Surf was mass produced for the light duty work of hauling kids to soccer practice. The Land Cruiser (while mostly used for the same purpose), was built in limited numbers, previously in its own exclusive factory (and still is to the best of my knowledge), to survive a long life in the Sahara or the Australian Outback. That's out-of-the-box, though you could certainly build up a 4Runner to a higher spec via the aftermarket.

At the time of introduction. Yes the 100 series was superior in everyway to the 4runner and other Toyotas at the time. Toyota has gone great lengths to match or exceed many of the 100 series capabilities in the 120 series Toyota.

As nice as the 100 series was...it is obsolete by todays standards. At the time in 1998 the Land Cruiser was rock solid, and well built. But its passed it time.

Actually, I probably could, I just couldn't sue Toyota if I subsequently flipped the truck over. Anyway, who said anything about towing a camper? Not me. But if, for some reason, I needed to haul a 7000 pound camper, I'd take the G-Wagen, or the MOG. You know what, forget 7000 pounds, that's for wimps! If I need to haul a 17,000 pound camper (!!!) I'll take the MOG. Try doing that with the puny little 4Runner...

Yeah, and I could drive an AMC Gremlin to work. It'll get the same job done, after-all. As I mentioned, I did look at the GX. But it couldn't haul the things I needed to haul (in terms of volume), and the build quality and component strength on the American-built Sequoia was no where near that of the Land Cruiser. For me, it was an easy choice.

BTW, my antiquated rough riding 140,000 mile '89 FJ62 is still solid as a rock. Slow, but it will get you to where you need to go !! I'd like to compare a like milage '89 4R to my 62. I would guarantee you that the 4R would feel like a tin can compared to the 62..My point is that LC'S have always been way overbuilt compared to virtually all other civilian off-road vehicles (except possibly for some LR Defender models ). What does this have to do with this discussion? Not much, except that comparing a contemorary 100LC to a 4R is not a fair comparison in the first place. While the 4R is a very good vehicle, it just is not in the same league as the 100LC. I don't think any sane person would argue THAT fact.

Also, I am not too well versed in some of this tech talk and was curious, because no one (that I can remember at least) has mentioned GVWR. Does that figure factor in to this discussion at all? If it does, someone please explain .......

Have you actually tried that with a 4Runner?

Please bring the 4Runner to the shop. I will gladly put it on a lift and then put the 100 next to it and we can start comparing component vs component and you will soon see where the differences are.

A 2007 4Runner will no doubt have more technology in it than a 1998 100 series, that does not make it a stronger and better built vehicle.

Please research failures on 4.7 motors in 4Runners/Tundra/Sequoia and the 100 series and let me know what you find. LC motors are build in Japan, the rest here. Same motor, not the same quality.

I have the pic of the new SL65 Black Series as my screen saver . Knowing me my next step will be into the AMG world. But I want to keep the SL550 for atleast 2 years. What is scary, if we don't hurry we will be driving electric cars/trucks and that just does not blow my skirt up.
