Labor Saving Shock Tool?
Ok, getting ready to replace the shocks. I know 1-3 are pretty standard, but good old number 4, RPS is supposed to be a bear. What is the cute little tool that turns this from a suicidal depression to a knuckle banger?

You'll need a ratcheting wrench, the size of which I've forgotten.

i think the stock shocks use a 17 mm might be 19, OMEs use a 22. Nothing too complicated. You can use a pipe wrench on the upper shock body (of the shocks you are tossing out). On the new ones, use the strongest hands you have. Its really not that bad. I found it to be one of the easier parts of my OME lift install, but mine spent its adolecense in California.

I cant remember what the standard OME shock uses, but if you`re running the "L" shocks in the rear, I believe its a 19mm nut on top. And yes, a ratchet- type (19mm?) wrench would be your best bet for that PITA top nut .

Somebody said a strap type oil filter tool was just the thing to grip the shock tube.

Shoot me down, but IIRC when I changed my rear shocks from stock to OME 101's(?) the stock shock was 22 I think, and the nut on the replacement OME was a thin walled nyloc of 17/19 I think.
I have a VISEGRIP chain wrench which I used on the top of the shock to hold it and swing it back and forwards just using a a ring/open ender spanner on the nut without taking it off the nut every time.
EDIT: so we all think different sizes........will have to check!

I am in agreement. Important thing is that you have both of these sizes in a ratcheting wrench.

I am going with Bilsteins. Do they use the factory size?

Gear wrench makes it easy, but it's not an absolute. We did mine with a normal box end, took a little longer, but worked fine. Big channel-locks to grab the shock were the ticket.

Yes, I just put on a set of Bilsteins and the it was the same  size POS knuckle busting nut up on top.
They ride nice, but I found out after the fact that they are 3/4" shorter than stock.
And did I mention that top nut is a bitch.

Great, Just so happens that my Bilstein HD's came in this evening.
Is there any specific SCIENCE into replacing these HD's from the OEM's. Just the Open ended wrench?
Start removing from the TOP first? then the bottom.
Does the Truck HAVE to be on Jackstands or just level as is?

I guess since you're not replacing the spring you don't have to put it up on stands, but I would for safety. The bottom bolt can be difficult and a few people have snapped the stud off, so spray it with WD or similar if it's not moving. Other than that I removed the bottom bolt first so we could get a better grip on the shock body to hold it and rotate it while working the top bolt.

On Australian LC's the OEM (original) nuts are definitely 22mm (measured), with the replacement OME (Old Man Emu) a thin walled nyloc of approximately 19mm (I haven't got back under to measure)
