Trading the FJ60 for a 100 series

Hi Guys,

I'm going to swap my FJ60 out for a 100 series truck - probably. I've been reading up on the 100 series trucks but I have a few questions.
  1. I'm looking at 00, 01, 02, and 03. How do I know if the truck has VSC and A-TRAC? Is there a button or switch I should be looking for or did they all include VSC and A-TRAC? Slee's buying guide says this was added in 00.
  2. Is 22K for a 03 w/ 68k miles a good deal?
  3. Should I buy an extended warranty on the truck?
  4. How many of you run premium fuel in you trucks?

Thanks in advance,

-- PNWFJ

1. All the 00 and beyond have VSC and A-TRAC, standard equipment. There are indicator lamps on the main dash when those are engaged or disabled(VSC).

2. Depending on the condition of the vehicle of course, but if that vehicle was good to excellent area that seems like it would be a decent deal. And a lot on the board have speculated prices will only continue to drop.

3. Not sure. My 03 came with an extended from the po so i didn't have to make that call.

4. I've run 87 octane and average 15-18 mpg. Some have run higher octane and find the mileage gain to out weigh the price difference. It would be something to experiment with as individual results may vary. The earlier hundies specified higher octane in the owner manual, but later ones, as my 03, specify 87 octane. There are probably a few threads that discuss some of those issues and have the specifics of the years.

Good luck with the search and keep us posted.

If you're interested, I have a very clean, slightly modded 2000 that is going up for sale as soon as I get a chance to gets some decent pics and post it. It is near Denver, CO.

As far as the warranty, I got one. The only thing I used it for was the starter which is common of 100's.

I always run 91 octane, I guess just because it says so???

IMHO... Get the 100 and keep the 60.

But that's just me.

I hear you Macneil. I get compliments on my 60 all the time - that won't happen in a 100 series. Unfortunately, I don't have enough room in the garage for 2 cruisers.

If you live at or near sea level I would run premium or at least 89. However at altitude regular is just fine (5,000+')...unless you are going to force induce the engine .

If it were I who was shopping the 100's I would go with the latest year possible that fits within your budget. As for extended warranties, I will not buy a used car without one. Good example is last summer the tranny in my '01 went out. Right there my warranty paid for itself plus some with that one issue. Used cars are too much of a crap shoot as far as I am concerned. Get the warranty say I !!

I've never bought an extended warranty for anything I've ever purchased, much less for a Land Cruiser. Maybe I'm lucky, I doubt it. I do my homework and buy things I know are NOT 'issue prone'. As to the OP, that sounds like a sweet price for that hundy. Check it out thoroughly, all body panels and bumpers have original vin stickers, etc.

You caught my eye here. I live at 6,300 feet. What is the science behind being able to get away with regular?

I am not challenging you, just wanting justification!

If I remember right higher octane prevents pre-ignition (pinging). At a lower air pressuer the tendency to pre-ignite is less.

I run 87 and get the same or better milage as I did with higher octane, no pinging.

As Rusty said above. There isn't enough pressure to generally take advantage of the higher octane at elevation. At or near sea level and/or force induction (super charger/turbo charger) it may be different. I have a good friend who is a pilot and he's the one that clued me in to this...
