100 series wont start???

Hi guys, didn't search yet but thought I ask anyway. Just recently my 100 won't start. It'll turn and seem like it'll run then idle around 4-500 RPM for half a second then shut off? I don't know what it is, fuel pump? TPS sensor? If I give it gas it'll run, but as soon as I let go then it'll die. Anyone here expience this before?
Thank for your help, and for looking.

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem since it's turning over and will run, but not well. Usually fuel pumps will either work or not. Have you checked the fuel filter?

A few months ago my 80 was doing the same thing. After looking around I found a small split in my intake hose, replaced it, and now it's working fine. HTH.

I'm actually having a similar problem w/my '01. She's idling low and sometimes drops down to 150-200RPM according to the tach and will stall. Today I started her up twice in a row and both times she stalled. The third time I applied a little gas while putting the tranny in Drive.

The computer threw a code that the dealership said indicated the tranny or tranny torque converter solenoid. However, the problem doesn't always occur when the transmission is engaged.

Any thoughts or similar experiences would be appreciated. I feel like I'm on borrowed time.

Salvo - What intake hose are you referring to?

I would bet he's talking about the intake from the air cleaner. A leak there can cause idle problems.

That's what I was thinking, but on the heels of the fuel comments I'm not sure...

I had a problem with stuttering at idle/not wanting to start up. Cleaned Throttle body, all better

Real: I was indeed referring to the air intake hose from the air cleaner. Sorry for the confusion.

Loud - Did you clean the throttle body yourself or have a shop do it?

Salvo - Thanks for the clarification. I'll check that out first.

My 99 had a fuel pump failure, symptoms were exactly what you experienced, Check relays first, because they can be the culprit, but my pump was dead. Not much trouble to replace, just had to take the middle seat out for access.

Thanks for the advice everybody. It took me a couple of days, but I picked up a can of Throttle Body Cleaner on my way home from work today ($4). The valve seemed to open just fine when I pushed on it, so I was skeptical that I had found the culprit, but I proceeded with the cleaning anyway. After spraying and wiping out black buildup a few times I clamped the air intake back on and sterted her up. As soon as the engine fired she idled at about 1200 RPM. After warming up for a minute or so the idle dropped to 800 RPM. I went for a spin and was unable to duplicate the symptoms that I had been experiencing. The hill-hold feature works a lot better when she's idling above 200 RPM, too.

It looks like I may have this little annoyance licked. Thanks again for the help! MUD Rocks!

Fouled mass air flow sensor ?
Any CEL ?
Clogged Fuel Filter ?

Alternator and battery checked ? When these act up nothing's right in the whole truck.

no start

Thanks for all the help. I haven't had a chance to check anything yet, but I think it has to do with the air intake/ throttle body too. I've talked to two Toyota techs and thats the first thing they mentioned for me to check. I'll do this first and see how this works. This doesn't happen all the time, once every so often. I just don't want it to leave my wife and kids stranded out somewhere by themselves.
I'll let you guys know how this goes.
