catalytic converter theft protection

A Tundra had its CC sawsall removed from our work parking lot yesterday. I was out of town. Got me thinking about my 100 though. With the up tick in thefts of CC's, I am thinking I might need to get a plate of some sort that I can bolt up to cover that part of the underside of the truck. I do not think it will take much to get them perps to move on to the next vehicle. Anyone does this ro something else like this already?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure one of the three skids that slee is developing will cover it up enough that nobody would want to mess with it.

I think you'd have to be careful covering up the cats too much for heat concerns.

You could always lower your LC, add side skirts and some armor cladding. I'd like to see that meth-head and his Sawzall get the cats of this baby...

I thought about this similar thing a while ago since I live in LA and theft/crime is high. There was a rash of cat thefts on Toyota 4Runners. After looking at the 4Runners and comparing them to my LX, the 4Runners are notably easier to attack. I decided that since I can lower my LX a bit with the AHC when I park it, that I'd just take a chance.

But during my investigation, I found this company that makes a "cage" that goes around the cat to protect from theft:

American Welding, Inc.

They contain precious metals such as platinum used to perform the catalytic conversion.

When I took my LC in for routine maintenance, I had my mechanic spot weld the CC in place. Now, if somebody wants to pull the CC, he says that they are going to need to have the tools to break the welds with them which will be time consuming and loud to use. It cost me about $50 to have this done.

sawzalls cut them off even if they are welded on. Doesnt take more then a couple seconds to make two cuts on hollow exhaust pipes with a sawzall.

It sounds like he actually welded the cat body, which will keep the cat from coming out after they've cut the exhaust pipes. I just hope it is obvious to the thief before he cuts the exhaust pipes.

Some cats are just bolt in, those are the ones they're talking about actually welding in place. Even if they welded something like an exhaust hanger (cat has to move too) it's just a piece of 1/4" pencil rod, pretty easy to chop through.

I would imagine that the weld points would be pretty hot too. Usually cats are not directly in contact with anything except pipe that has hangers before and aft.

Wire, copper plumbing, irrigation backflow prevention valves I knew they were stealing but the cats ? That's new to me.

That cage is $225 plus install! What does a new cat cost?

Thieves can get close to $100 from scrap / junk yards for a cat. Cats contain, in addition to platinum, palladium and rhodium. Rhodium is, for the most part, the most expensive of all precious metals. Rhodium is trading at over $9,700 per ounce right now.

Toyota Cats have more Ozs of metal than many other brands. I was talking to my muffler guy about them. He said the pro thieves use a shear to remove them. The sawzall is too noisy and takes too long. He said the guy who buys his won't buy any that are sheared off because of this. I have 3 that I'm going to sell. It will pay for 1.5 new tires for the 100 .

Don't Slee's step sliders offer cat protection? That might be enough to deter the bastards...

What does this shear tool look like? Is there even enough clearance under the rig to crawl under there to cut off the cat? I know if you drop the AHC, combined w/ the stock running boards, it's near dang impossible for an adult to squeeze under there and have enough room to lift your arms to perform any task.

Hi,
Love the IH8MUD site and forum, its great to be able to get some info from other countries that have very similar vehicles.

I hadn't heard of the theft of CC's before and just hope the trend doesn't catch on here in Australia.

How are the precious metals are extracted? by heat etc? (no I'm not thinking of going into business LOL).

I'm a member of an Australian 4WD forum (www. Exploroz.com) and have posted a link to this thread for the members info.

Cheers

G'day All from FNQ, Australia.

What's the go with the cats getting lifted????Some guys are into some crazy stuff...

Why not put diesel stickers on you fuel fillers? (unless your diesels also run cats over there)

On one of the 4Runner forums, there was a thread about thieves steeling owner's spare tires from underneath since the '03+ 4runner has a steel cable attaching the spare to the car. I looked under my LX and it also uses a steel cable, yet I haven't heard of any issues with spares getting stolen from 100's.

Who would want the 5 bolt wheels? Whereas the 4Runner 6 bolt fits Isuzu, Nissan, Toyota, Chevy etc....

What would the difference in chain or cable matter? You'd have to crank either down to cut it.

Jim, from what I hear most are using cordless sawzalls.

and once they hack them off(because ya welded them) the repair cost just went thru the roof.......that said most tweakers just sawsal them off and dont use tools to unbolt(takes too long)....but some do.

I saw a news article that they were getting like $50 ea. Gotta wonder how a recycler can feel good about paying some tweaker showing up with an armful of cats.

I'd run over said legs if they appeared to be skinny and full of track marks.
