1999 Land Cruiser DIY Service

Hello,

I have just joined and would like say thank you all for such a great web site.
Here are my specs and history with my 1999 Land Cruiser.
Purchased January 2008 96000 miles.
Had a local main dealer complete the following work. Replace timing belt and tensioner, plugs, throttle body cleaned. Transfer case and both differentials fluid change, prop shaft grease nipples lubricated.
Mileage now is 99,550.
From now on I am servicing it myself and consequently I am about to perform the following.
Engine oil and filter change, grease wheel bearings, and lube prop shaft.

The two problems are.
Passenger rear window slow to go up.
When pulling away from stop, a small clunk that feels like a slack universal joint taking up the slack. All couplings are tight though.

Questions?
Brand of oil and filter. Brand of grease and grease gun. Which service manual is best.
Do I need the following?
Trolley jack, axle stands, torque wrench.

Any advice gratefully received

Thank you

Welcome. To tackle your questions in no order:

- window may be hung up on the track, try dry lubricant in the track
- I use Mobil 1 and an OEM filter, Valvoline synthetic grease, Harbor Freight grease gun
- Factory Service Manual (FSM) is by far and away the best
- to do the wheel bearings you could actually do it with the jack in the cargo area, just one side at a time. Yes, you do need a torque wrench for the wheel bearings (good to torque the lug nuts on too).

If it's a u-joint going bad you should get some vibration decelerating off the highway, at least that's a common way to tell.

Welcome!

Clunking in the drivetrain is a very common feature of cruisers. And harmless usually. Often the driveshaft itself or just play in the diffs. Have a look just in case but likely no biggie. Numerous threads on that around here.
