Shopping a '99 - How to be sure the exhaust manifolds are OK?

Found a super clean '99 with about 65k miles on it. Want to be sure we don't buy a rig with the dreaded exhaust manifold issue. How can we be sure ????

Also, any other big gotcha's to look for other than usual used car suspects?

Hoping to switch from the 80-series FZJ to the UZJ 100-series.

TIA,

R.

The main sign of the exhaust manifolds being cracked is a slight ticking upon a cold startup. It will usually go away within 10-30 seconds. I ran mine for 30K before I had it fixed with no problems. It's more of an annoyance than anything.

Even though the rig only has 65K, you may consider the 90K service since the vehicle is 9 years old. That can run from $1-2K including parts.

Thanks pint. Yes, I thought about the 90k mi. service since at least one maintenance schedule I have seen says "90,000 or 72 months". Would probably drive it for a bit and get all the other items baselined before I dropped that bit of cash into it.

Don't mistake the cats ticking (normal) for the exhaust manifold. Easy to tell the two apart, they come from two very different locations.
