Sunroof Leak Help

Hey Guys and Girls,

I'm in need of advice and help regarding my 2002 LC that is leaking on the passenger side through the factory sunroof when there are heavy rains here in south florida. as a matter of fact i'm desperate now that it is Hurricane season. There was a Ventvisor wind deflector for the sunroof when i bought it and i have removed it but there is still water flooding my passenger floorboard when the water overflows the sunroof tray and runs down the interior panels.
The weather strip on the roof looks good no gaps or tears.
I can get a replacement fairly cheap but don't know if this will correct it or open a can of worms when i try to replace.
Your Help and expertice is much needed. Also it seems that if i put some pressure on the roof there is some play.

Thanks in advance

Matt

You need to clear the drain tubes using compressed air or a stiff wire. Look at the corners of the sun roof and you'll find the drain holes. By the way, this why cutting a giant hole in the roof a stupid f-ing concept in the first place. Sunroofs ALWAYS leak.

Mobi-Arc,

Thanks for the advice. Next one will not have a sunroof no matter how much i like the open air feeling. I'll try blowing down the tubes. Any idea if replacing the weatherstrip will be more trouble than its worth vs. having dealership do it?
Thanks,

Matt

It does sound like one your sunroof tray drain tubes is clogged. We see that alot at my work, the water has nowhere to go, so it takes the path of least resistance and goes inside your rig!

I too had a leak, but it turned-out to be the middle of the seal on the back edge. Dealer installed a new one under warr. and now no more leaks.

Also be careful when using compressed air to blow out the line, if you use too much pressure... it's possible to push the line itself off the s/r housing completely. Then you're looking at headliner removal to re-attach.

I use a vac first with a gerry-rigged attachment/hose to fit in that area. Then I follow up with the compressed air if needed.
I usually find debris from the trees, twigs etc with the vac.

I recently had the leaking problem too....but the water found its way down to the drivers side floor board.

I needed another item fixed (drivers window stuck down), so the dealer fixed both for me at a high price!

However, no more leaks. Dealer said to use an aircompressor to blow out and keep clean. He said they use a roto-rooter rod to clear and they blow it out, then they put hot water down the drain holes.

After it was cleaned at the dealer, he recommended using an air compressor to keep it clean.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to the power of the forum! I think I just fixed my driver's side leak by clearing out the drain tube. Man it's been driving me nuts. It's passed the hose test, and now I just need a good old fashioned frog-choker to see if it really works!
