For what it's worth, I don't care if the rear bumper drags off stuff. I want a stout rear bumper so it can handle being set down on stuff and drug off. I often use my receiver hitch for just such purpose. I use it all the time in this manner with my stock bumper - let the hitch take it, and it does it well.

You won't care until it hangs you and stops your progress. Then, when buried in the dirt you can't back up either. Out comes the strap to pull you up and out.

Yep. Not only are higher iron ore & energy prices the culprit, but there's a mining area in Queensland (Bowen basin) that is source to 40% of the world's steelmaking (coking) coal that was inundated by flood waters this Spring. The mines are reportedly out of commission for months. As a result, the price of this coal rose 3x to $300/ton. Toyota & Mitsubishi Heavy Indust. are now paying about $800/ton from Nippon Steel, up about $300/ton, and they are huge buyers. I'm sure the smaller buyers down the chain pay even more. The weak US dollar doesn't help, either, as we have to compete with international buyers with stronger currencies.

Isn't that why we usually travel with more than one rig?

That's because you had someone ELSE install the rear ARB for you Jonah!!

OK - I like mine too, but I was really hating the MOFO for a while there...

tupperware in action

i backed into a give way (yield) sign last Sunday.
There's nothing on the end of the "bumper" that protects the vehicle. Smashed the lens too.
Repair quote is $4277.

Agreed, get other quote but this time, don't included stock bumper (get Slee or 4x4Labs) and rear lights fixture (you can buy and installed it yourself).

Regards,

Regards,
that's what i wanted to do, but i lease the 'cruiser and insurance is part of the lease, so i have to take it to the insurance companies preferred repairer. I'll work on that angle again as it's booked in for tomorrow morning. They seem ok and i'll be inspecting the repair before any body filler and paint goes on.

Otherwise I will be getting a custom rear bar soonish - next few months. Pity i couldn't do it earlier. i just didn't have the cash.

i'll post the photos of it post-repair up in the picture thread.
cheers
peter

even when its leased you still take it to your adjuster and they give you ur write up with the values of damages. and then it is up to you to take it and get it repaired . the insurance company doesnt care if you get it reparied or not. nor do they care if you do the work yourself. grow up and man up and do what you want.

it doesn't work like that down here in Australia and has nothing to do with manhood. I'm insulted you'd suggest such a thing. The terms of the lease agreement are that i have to use the insurance companies repairer. Period. Unless i pay for it myself of course, which is a different thing altogether.

I coulld have got it repaired without the insurance company being informed - the two quotes i got were $3800 and $3900 so the official repairer in at $4277 is like "who cares" given that my insurance covers the lot including the hire/courtesy car.

The quote without replacing the tupperware still came in at $2k + ... so why would i pay $2.5k plus the $1500 -$2000 for my custom bar from my preferred fabricator? (no courtesy car)

So i'd be out of pocket over $5k if i chose not to go through the insurance company. And that's $5k i'd prefer not to spend when i dont have to. (again, no courtesy car)

I have a spotless 25 year driving record until now. My insurance rating 1 will still be preserved.
cheers
peter

Let the insurance pay for it to make it like new on their dime. Then later add a rear ARB if you like. I guess you are leasing to own?

exactly.
yep...i take ownership March 2009...which is why i asked to see the repairs before prep and paint. They have a good reputation.

Alli was trying to show you guys is the lack of protection that the stock bar has at the very end of the stock bar ie on "the corners"..the ends if you like.. So the question of spending the money on a 3rd party bar in this thread and another current thread is highlighted why you might want to.
cheers
peter

Ignore that guy, Peter. My hunch is he failed to realize you were not within our borders. Regardless, good luck on getting that worked out.
