One big happy family.

I agree. Agreeing ain't fun. The fun is in the disagreement. Wait, I mean...er...

It is "couldn't" not "could'nt" and "practice" not "practise"

Your English is way, way better than the Spanish I tried to use while in Madrid!

My wife drives a 2003 VW Jetta TDI. It's got almost 90,000 miles on it and the only thing I have done is change the oil and filters (including the water filter) at the prescribed intervals. We haven't had any engine problems at all. It's been a great car. We usually run it on 20% Biodiesel. There is a very light puff of smoke at cold startup, but otherwise you can't smell a thing. It has some clatter at idle, but on the highway you would never know you were driving a diesel. MPG averages around 44 depending on use; about 50 MPH on straight highway driving. My understanding is the new VWs with the CRD engine don't even have the idle clatter. Next year, this one goes to my son to drive and the wife gets a new one.

Conversions = Legal?

The other thing that nobody has mentioned here is the legality. It isn't legal to convert your gasoline powered car to diesel unless there you are in effect duplicating a vehicle/engine package that was already available in the US. The EPA is very strict on this. Some of you who live in states or areas where emissions aren't inspected might get away with it, but for the rest of us, oh well.

Too bad we dont' have what's coming down the road from Jeep Performance. Several mags are reporting that Jeep is going to put out a 2.8L crate motor + conversion kit (the same diesel that was in the Liberty) and sell it for retrofitting into US Wranglers. This will be a US legal swap!

That does not agree with information I got from Nevada DMV.
What they told me was the engine must come from the same year or newer than the recipient vehicle, is/was certified for sale in the US and have all the engines original emission control equipment in place.

This jives with CARB as well, except that the engine must have been certified for sale in CALIFORNIA, not just the U.S. There are a few other restrictions as well, which pretty much rules out any foreign diesel engine built after about 1990 for those of us living in this fascist state...
