Exhaust Manifold Crack

Hello all,

I have a 99 100 with 26,000 miles and counting (yes 26k). At any rate, I was told this weekend that the right exhaust manifold had a small fracture in it. This causes an exhaust noise (very slight) when I floor it.

I have found allot of info on the forum, but still have questions.

My questions are as follows:

Do I need to replace this right away (if so, both sides or just the cracked one)?
Is there an aftermarket alternative?

I called Toyota and they want $1,300 per side, ouch! Additionally they said it would not be covered by any emission warranty.

Please assist.

Oh yes, the dreaded exhaust manifold crack. It is common and can be costly. No easy fix that I am aware of other than replacing. I looked and looked, but ended up having Lexusben replace mine. He did a great job and at a fair price. PM me if interested and i can hook you up. No rush to fix as I drove mine for nearly 50K without a problem. Just get used to the annoying tick, tick, tick! It will get worse as the crack opens, but won't cause any problems I'm aware of. I could go on for hours...We need to hook up for a beer anyway...all the south Denver 100's, you, me, BMWSTOY, etc!

Darn, I don't remember if we ever finished the discussion on whether one can check visually for the cracks with everything assembled, or not...

I'm still hoping that we would also get some detailed pics of the thing...

I'm in the Sacramento, CA area. Give me details and I may consider mine for fitment.

The cracks on mine were on the inside bend near the engine under the flange that screws into the block. I've heard this is where they usually are. No way to possibly see or feel with the manifolds on the vehicle. Sorry no pics.

Hello all,

Pint, I know the second I write this it I will start hearing the ticking noise you speak of, but at this point there is no such noise. Mine sounds more like extra air escaping form the tail pipe upon hard acceleration.

On a lighter note I passed a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a Toyota Recovery Unit sticker plastered on the tail gate. It was broken down on the side of the Highway.

I just emailed Gibson to see if they are still interested in making headers.

I would have went back in my 100, pulled over to help and offered a strap!

No one was there to offer a strap too. If I only had a sticker that said "JEEP it's what's for dinner", I would have pulled over and placed it on his bumper.

Mine has been ticking for years. When I had the money to fix it, I didn't care. Now that I don't really have the money to fix it, I don't care....I've become "enlightened"....so that my wallet won't be.

Have the same "ticking" noise under acceleration! Either a crack or warped, been like that for about 15k. If Gibson decides on engineering an aftermarket header, I'd buy a set. Keep me posted.

headers

I have the same ticking sound. Hoping it was exhaust system leak and not a manifold. Does any one offer headers currently?

I have the exhaust system tick (expanding and contracting stainless steel exhaust system), not the exhaust maniflold tick.
