Removing Rear Spoiler???

I would like to remove the rear spoiler on my 2000 cruiser. In my search, I only found a post on removal of rear wing on the later model 100's, but I would like to see what others have done. How many holes need to be plugged or filled? Anyone have pic's of what they have done once the rear spoiler is removed?

Thanks in advance for the direction.

Zane

My understanding is that post is the one for later model 100's with the BIG wing

only thing out of all of that is it will help keep that back window clean.

Zane, you will be left with a couple holes, but thats a perfect place to mount some lights then since you already have holes

I have some windshield sealer that is nasty stuff seals anything it touches. That and about 4 plastic plugs fro ACE hardware and I think we could remove the 'wing' and seal it up just fine.

I took the stupid wings off both of mine, I hate the way it looks and it breaks the clean lines of the 100 wagon. Took it off my '99 first and then conducted a comparison test by washing both trucks several times and comparing the dirt-dust between them. Zero difference, so I took off the wing from my wife's '03 yesterday. I reused the button-head screws the hold the wing to the brackets because my local hardware place didn't have replacements available.

I like the clean look and the four bolt heads sticking out don't bother me at all, it's still 1000 times better than the stupid wing. See pictures below (also noticed after completing the removal that the '99 and '03 have the nozzle for the rear wiper on opposite sides...weird).

Exiled...I like the old school Land Cruiser badge on your 99. I've been thinking about the same thing. Or maybe put that same badge on each rear fenders like an FJ62?

I removed mine and plugged the holes with some plastic body snap plugs, like what is used to attach interior panels and trim pieces. Got them at Lowes, they are black and the head fits perfect. I put some grease in the hole first to make it water tight, and give me the option to reuse the bolt holes later.

Thnx! Mine came with the hideous "Miami Vice Package" (gold trim everywhere), so I had to come up with something. I thought about doing the emblem on the sides, especially since I'm planning a tire carrier that will block the emblem....

I am removing my wing this week. It looks so much better without it. I will paint the bolts with touch up paint to match my truck. This removal should increase fuel mileage too.

I like the old school LC badge as well.

Have you considered painting the rear d pillar vents black like the 62's to go along with your old school badge?

It is funny that everything Toyota charged extra for I am removing, front hood bug shield (gone), sunroof wind deflector (gone - plus it makes a terrible noise at over 90), rear wing (gone this week) and running boards (gone at some point).

Mine came with the wing removed, looks like they used a carwash to remove it. Four big plugs stick out on the hatch.

Funny how the LX's have all the available factory bling but a lot of them don't have the rear spoiler. (phew)

Removed at lunch. A 4 mm allen wrench and a 10mm wrench. Luckily for me some of the paint was rubbed off where the bracket touched the body. It seems like a really good place to mount some lights.

Same here! Bug roof, roof rack, running boards, rear spoiler, all gone. Mine didn't have the sunroof deflector.

I have thought about painting the vents, especially the ones on my wife's '03 because it's silver and I think it would be a nice touch. But I took a peek by pulling some trim and it was a more elaborate process than I expected, so it's on the back burner (actually, the whole truck is on the back burner right now, l have some work issues to deal with).

I need to find some different bolts to fill the holes, ones with a rounded head.

I didn't want to start another thread on this topic, but I just returned my cruiser to the LCoT configuration by replacing the rear spoiler.

Tire pressure and wedge adjustments couldn't compensate for the dramatic loss in down-force I experienced in high-speed turns

More importantly, the rear wing does make a big difference in how dirty the rear window gets when driving on dusty roads and with windshield wiper fluid exceeding $3/gallon putting the thing back on just made good sense.

This is an example of where I find function trumps form.

You can't see it very well, but the 80 without the spoiler's window is covered in dirt. The other 3 are relatively clean.

I actually prefer the look of the spoiler. My truck didn't come with one though.... But then again, I like the looks of the running boards too. Guess that makes me the oddball around here.

Both the older and newer spoilers look lame. I think the old fin spoilers are installed at port. Seems the US LC's mainly have them. The spoilers only add poor looks and reduce the mpg's by adding more drag. Dirt on the rear window isn't a big factor since (1) you have a rear window wiper and (2) the window isn't power lowering like on the 4runner, so no dirt falls inside the rear hatch. Just another way the dealer hits buyers with unwanted bling. I've yet to see a LX with one other than the newer type, and even that's rare.

I removed my rear spoiler an hour ago ....looks 100% better ....
to fill the 4 holes on the top of the hatch i re-used the 4 allen screws that were used to attach the spoiler on the brackets , also i used teflon tape aound the threads...

I can't say I'm seeing any difference in MPG with the spoiler back on, but I have a rack, round bars and a box on top so I expect the spoiler is the least of my aerodynamic concerns. Not to mention, not getting powdered in dust every time I shut the rear hatch is nice.

I'll get the spoiler chromed, maybe then I'll get some respect from the H2 guys
