CB & Scangauge installation

I installed a Cobra 75 WX ST CB and a Scangauge II this weekend. You all weren't kidding about how easy the dash and console parts come out and go back in rattle free. Here are some pictures of my Sunday Afternoon project.

Although not the coolest stuff to install, it looks much cleaner than having all the wires laying around the cabin.

Here is a typical live reading on the scanguage. I haven't done much programming on the guage yet, but it seems pretty customizable if I can find the time.

Water temp stays around 188-193 degrees F.

Intake Air Temp is usually just a few degrees above ambient, untill I stop moving. It climbs up quickly, I have seen it go up to 138.

LOD is a percentage of power currently used by the engine.

VLT is a no brainer.

It can do cost per mile, MPG , and all sorts of other stuff. Anyone else playing with one of these for comparison? I thought Moooooo had one.

Oh yea...it reads and clears MILs too...that's why I got it...I think.

Nice job Travis. I've had the Scan gauge to install for a while...got dig in and get it done. Be sure to download the code definitions so that you have them in the truck if needed...

Thanks spresso...us 20 somethings are always looking for a pat on the back for some reason. I think it comes from up bringing.

I usually have the manual, but a copy of the codes wouldn't be a bad idea for the glove box. Consider it done.

I drove around for 2-3 weeks with it loose, trying different mounting locations. It is nice by the regular gauges, but blocks all of the idiot lights. I like it right on the dash, but too visible for would be thieves and way too much sun for the gauge. I don't need to be looking at that thing all the time anyway, so i just put it down there.

They say it is tough to see if the sun hits it in a certain way, but I haven't had any trouble.

Haha...I was hoping no one would ask. It is just a tad , but it works and it's only temporary.

Long story short, I ordered a CB antenna/mount that I thought would fasten to the DS fender and pass thru the seem between the fender and the hood, but I ended up with a gutter mount, which is useless on the hundy. Try finding a CB mount in south FL. Like the Seminole Indians, we have made them just a little difficult to find. Most folks don't even know that they exist.

Anyway, I had to make it work, so I took the antenna off the mount that it came with and mounted it on the TJM Bumper through one of the aux light mounting holes that were already there. I thought it looked goofy at first but after 2 months, I got used to it.

As soon as I find a suitible piece of scrap stainless, I plan on making my own mount to attach behind the rear hatch bumper on the passenger side. That is unless I can find the mount that Alviro is using on his 80. I think that is the best option, but I can't find one for the life of me and I have already spent enough time shopping for CB antennas. CB antennas have to be the most frustrating and painfully boring mods to shop for.

do any of you know if the Scangauge will be able to get codes from a 1HD-FTE ( the turbodiesel 4.2). I have my OBD port in the same place as the V8.

thanks for any help !

OBD or OBDII?
OBDII is a standard protocol, it should be the same for any make or model of vehicle.

The codes may be different for each vehicle but there are on-line resources that will tell you what each code means.

Thanks Rusty,

I’m pretty sure it’s OBDII. I guess the CAN bus is the same no matter what engine the truck has. I reckon the diesel just has a different set of sensors/feedbacks. Another thing, we have tried to hook it up to a couple of different workshop scanners. It’s difficult to establish the connection, 75% of the time the scanner fails to communicate with the truck. Is it normal to try to connect a couple of times before it works.

Jesper

It is definitely OBDII but it will work on some OBDI's as well. I tried mine on the LC, the wife's Dodge Van and a buddy's new Mini and it hooked up right away. Buy the extra cable for $20 so that you can use it on other vehicles without having to take out the wire every time.

VX-R, I also have a scan interface that connects to my laptop. It works flawlessly on my Honda Stream, but I haven't been able to make it work in the 100. It never gets a connection.

Thanks guys, I’ll order the Scangauge.

Dandon; Your laptop troubles is similar to what I experienced with our workshop scanner ( Würth WOW). I was told if you didn’t buy the software upgrades at some point the scanner would fail to communicate. I don’t understand why though.

Hold up, I do know 100 TD on here purchased a scangauge for his Turbo Diesel 4.2 and ended up returning it because it didn't work for him. I'd wait to hear from him or PM him.

Thanks Hoser !

I’ve mailed ScanGauge for them to verify compatibility with the 1HD-FTE , prior to finalizing the order.

If 100 TD sees this, I would be interested in hearing why your ScanGauge didn’t work
