Annoying rattling sound in the 100

98 100 - I thought it was the heat shield rattling, but it doesn't seem to be. It is like something is loose and it doesnt go away when the truck gets up to temp. Any idea where else i should look?? Seems to be coming from the front...

I've had a rattling noise from the front wheel/suspension area that sounds out when travelling over rougher terrain (on & off-road). Might be the inner fender panel(s) or? It the same sound my old '71 Chevelle SS made that was caused by the lug nut covers . The LC is going in for some suspension work in a couple weeks...so hopefully we'll figure it out...so I don't have to force myself to ignore it anymore .

It could be the biscut of metal rattling around in your catalytic converter....

Sometimes they corrode around the edges, inside the box, and they start to rattle around. Try crawling under and thumpin on the Cat with your fist and listen for a rattle.

My 99 100 ratttled when i got it and it was the heat shield. I replaced it for about $150.00 but figured out later i should have just put some extra bolts through it.

I had a rattle that would also come out when the passenger's front door was slammed hard enough.
Turned out to be the bracket holding the auxillary fan in place. It's in front center (right behind the grill which, on an LX, lifts up along with the hood so it was easy to get to) and it was a case of metal-to-metal vibrating and causing either a rattle or a squeak.
I folded a piece of electrical tape or something and sandwiched it between the two metal parts. Never heard it again.

Hope this helps.

I had the rattle problem.

Is your steering control more sloppy than normal when the steering rack gave up? My control is still crisp but the rattle is still there, it drive me nuts.

It was until the near-end when we felt losseness and was losing power.

I too have a very annoying rattle in the front left, sounds like a large metal panel, shield, but can't find anything loose. The usless dealer says it might be my roof rack. Nice guess, not!!

Sounds like something large, almost like the front bumper.

It's driving me nuts, it sounds like Fred Sanford, very embarassing.

I bet it is the same sound - quite embarrassing.

Heat shield

Great way to test to see if it's the heat shield on the c. converter - get under the LC and pound on the exhaust pipe around the converters (you might want to wait until it cools off...) keep doing this until (or if) you hear that annoying rattle. There are a few bolts that have a tendency to work loose or fall out on these shields...this just happened to 98 a couple of months ago.... my converter shield was missing a bolt so everytime my tranny shifted or there was a low rpm condition I would hear the rattle. Bolt installed, noise gone....

yep happens only at low RPM - i'll check out the heat shield on the CAT

I would say it sounds like the heat shields. Better off just putting on the clamps and cinching them up. A quick and easy fix. If this doesn't work, then you can keep on looking.

I am having the same sort of issue. When I go over bumps in town the truck sound like it is about to fall a part. I have gotten under the truck numerous times to try to find the problem or replicate the problem by banging on certain areas but have yet to find out what it is. I have noticed that after a hard rain when the truck is all wet it does not do it nearly as much. I think that I have narrowed it down to the left front area around the wheel.

I'm hearing a rattle in my tacoma at 2000 rpm. I think it's inside the cat. I've checked shields, bolts, pipes, etc. and can only reproduce noise when I bang on the pipe near the cat. I've made up my mind to replace the cat but dealer wants to charge me $1100 just for the parts! What to do?

Sounds like it nearly has to be the heat shield on the cat.
I had that problem. It was more noticable when taking off at certain revs. Very embarrassing.
I cured it by putting a bid jubilee clamp around it.
Very simple to do and cheap.

Get under the vehicle and check to see if ALL the bolts are on the cc shields. There is one that will hide on you ...that's the one that was missing on my 98. Your problem is probably either this what I'm describing or your converter is rusted out on the inside and rattles....You could always cut the converter out, run a straight pipe, put some spreewells on it, a boom box in the back sell it to someone in east LA....then go and get you an FJ40.

I think it is rusted out...I've exausted myself trying to figure out the easy fix. I could cut it out since I live in SC (no inspection!!!) but I'm planning on selling it and getting an '88 62 as my daily (Wife's driving the 100). I don't want the next guy to have legal issues. Maybe I'll sell it with the rattle and let him deal with it.

I have a 99 LC that has a thin metal rattle near the front left. It seems to only happen when it's cold. I've banged on the exhaust but no luck. I'll check the aux fan bracket tonight.

One other place I looked - and you may want to as well - is the brake shield. The brake shield on my 96 Lexus LS400 had a nasty crack and rattled pretty bad at high speeds.

I'll check that too...the thing that really gets me is that mine only rattles at 2000 rpm. high speed, low speed, doesn't matter...
