| Transfer case leaking oil Hi,
I was getting a diff oil stench, so I checked the diffs for leaks. I found that the TC was wet with oil, and I cleaned the area and checked oil level. About 1/4 liter was missing. I changed the oil and drove for a while with the TC cover plate off, to be sure where the oil was coming out. Both plugs seem to be tight since no oil was there, but I found a small amount at the rear end of the TC. Not enough to have dropped the level, I checked it.
Where can it be coming out?
OTOH, I wonder if this orange rubber-like seal stuff is OEM or this TC has been repaired by the PO. Anyway, the oil doesn't get out there.

| Mine leaked from the front output seal...(the one from front of t-case to front driveshaft) It kind of sucks because you have to access the seal from inside the t-case. I don't know but there is probably a rear seal too. If that has to be accessed from inside the t-case it might be more involved because most of the gears, etc. are in the rear part of the case...

| Check to make sure the transfer case breather hose is not blocked, or has come off.

| Remember all those mud holes? Hate to say it, but playing in the mud messes up the seals.

| Slee is definitely right...My rear main oil seal and t-case output seal were all filled with mud and sand when they were replaced for leaking...I used to like mud holes, but now I will avoid (atleast some of them)

| Edit out all that cocky crap i said about being easy.... Didn't think before posting.
But hey, I'm working on a Chryler LHS so every Cruiser repair looks easy to me right now.
But remember to apply some grease to the inner lip of the seal BEFORE you put it in so the driveline does not burn or scar the seal on the first outing.

You have to remove the tailhousing to get the seal out. The flange does not remove with a nut. |

| Ah, my fault., You're right Christo, I did mine and you do have to take off the tail housing. Sorry about that Dandon, you are in for a bit of work if you do it yourself. Here is the breakdown from the FSM. You will have to remove the driveline, rear housing, and then breakdown the output shaft to remove/replace the seal.

| Ok, thanks to all for the info. I think I could try to fix it myself, if I can plan on a weekend with enough free time for myself (remember I have 3 children ). I'm not afraid of a bit of wrenching (though my skills are quite basic ), provided it can be done solo and in a garage without an elevator or ditch. But maybe the leak is not serious enough to be an urgent repair. OTOH, i'm due for the timing belt change, so I'll ask the dealer for a quote on this TC issue. I'll swallow a Valium or two before that .
100TD, the breather hose is in it's place, but I'll check if it's clogged.
Slee, unfortunately (or not) most of our offroading fun necessarily involves either mud or water (when it has rained enough), or sand. Your kind of rockcrawling locations are either inexistent or off-trail, which is illegal for driving (and they're getting pretty serious with fines ).
Is there any preventive maintenance to do regarding the TC seals?
Campfire, you have reminded me that I still have to download the FSM from the Euro Toyota tech site. For 16 € +VAT it's well worth it.
