Painted rims?

Trying to gauge if this is going to fly. I've been thinking of the colored rim look for a while but I'm really not into the completely black out look. So why not ask you fellow 100 Cruiserheads out there. I've been looking at dark grays, gray, etc. when I came across this color at the local ACE hardware. So?

Please be gentle

If you post a decent pic of your rig, I'm sure it can be photoshopped.

Thanks hoser, but that would be too clean & easy. I'm out to paint the spare and put it on....

And here it is... It's a lot darker tone now that it's on the rim with the tire next to it.

Looks good. But its hard to believe that's the same color on & off the rig! Would look even better sans the "hub caps" IMO. BTW your rig looks much better without the factory running boards. Are you going to get sliders?

It's a Cruiser Thing

And to avoid chat, I'm painting one set of rims and leave the knobs on them. And then going for a set of Revo's on the 2002 silver rims

I like the subtle contrast for your rig as it looks more off road. I would stick with the factory if you were going more for street/dirt combo look.

Direct sunlight sure does lighten them up. And yes, I'm working on sliders Dan if I can get enough time to myself and some projects. Selling your yet?

Not yet. Since they do the job building another set has dropped down on the list a couple notches.

Jeff,

Couple questions -

What did you clean them with?

Why not powdercoating?

As far as the look, it seems good, but how about a picture in direct sunlight...

I just cleaned them quickly with some SimpleGreen, I'm going to bead blast them when I do all four. I would like powdercoated rims, but I'm getting picky on the color. I need to look into what specific colors they can do. I think Deiselbigot had some done in Sacramento at a decent price.

And for the sunlight...

Bringing back an old thread from the dead. I finally painted my wheels last week. Had them mounted this morning. Whole process took a few hours. I just sanded the rims, primered a few times, and shot them with 3 coats of Dupli-Color Wheel Coating in graphite and 2 in clear. I like the results. Hopefully it will hold up.

It's not black, It's "Bronze"
Are you using enamel? It only lasts about 1.5 yrs in a high UV environment until it fades and turns chalky. The enamel takes about a month to cure, too. There's a water-based metal paint that lasts about 2.5 yrs, less curing time, but not as hard. Hard anodizing would probably hold up better.

Pint, that looks real sharp! I can't decide which way I'm going to go with my wheels, graphite like yours or straight black.

I went round and round over the black versus graphite for 6 months! Finally I had to say, what the hell...it's only gonna cost me $50 in materials. I think black with my black truck and accessories would be a bit much for my taste. I wanted a little contrast.

You did it right Pint! I like the graphite look. That's the color I was thinking about painting my new 18". But got lazy and cheap and left them facto silver. Good thing 'cuz they're already scratched .

I know they'll get scratched since I was cheap and used rattle cans. But that makes touch up easy as well!

That, as you know, is the benefit to rattle canning them...much better touch up match.

Did the tire installers get the tires installed without scratching?

I personally do not like the dark gray/black colored wheels. To me, they look like there is a ton of brake dust on them and need to be cleaned... IMO. Everone is different though, do what YOU like !!
